So get comfortable, put on your entrepreneurial lens, and buckle up as we explore the ins-and outs of pitching a B2B startup!

What is a B2B Startup?

B2B startups, or business-to-business startups, provide a product or service to other businesses. This can be in the form of software, hardware, or consulting services. So for example, San Francisco-based SalesForce is one of the best known B2B companies in the world, providing a all-in-one SaaS platform businesses to manage their selling process and sales reps, marketing, and CRM. Salesforce holds the record for reaching $10 billion in revenue faster than any other enterprise software company.

And Slack is one of the most recognizable b2b companies in the business world and has skyrocketed to success since its founding in 2014. It provides a unique workflow that enables efficient collaboration between teams and integrates with a wide range of other apps.

Another example of a B2B business model are income verification startups which help financial institutions quickly verify income during the mortgage and car loan process and landlords verify income when renting apartments.

This is in contrast to B2C (or business-to-consumer) companies which provide a product or service directly to consumers. A simple example of a B2C business is McDonald’s which directly sells its hamburgers to customers who walk through their doors.

Why Do Investors Like Investing in B2B Startups?

Many investors prefer to invest in B2B companies, and in many cases, they focus exclusively on investing in B2B. Once you understand that venture capital and private equity investors are primarily seeking “unicorns” (startups that reach valuations of over a billion dollars), it is easy to see why.

Because B2B companies sell to businesses (or in some cases, organizations) by solving their specific needs, they generate recurring revenue which is much more reliable and predictable than selling direct to consumers. This makes it easy for investors to model the business’ revenue over time as it is able to scale and the likelihood that the startup will be reaching valuations of over a billion dollars.

However, like with all things, B2B startups do carry risk. As opposed to consumer-focused startups that target individual customers, B2B startups pursue a longer sales cycle and higher price points which means that it can take a while for a B2B startup’s revenue to get going.

B2B startups tackle a variety of problems for businesses, including cultivating their brands, tracking business prospects, lead generation, and managing benefits for employees.
